D&RGW/RGS Steam Engine Sets

D&RGW/RGS steam engines went through several different lettering and numbering schemes during their service. For example the changes in the cab numbering style for the pre and post wreck RGS 455, pre-Sunrise vs. Sunrise RGS styles, as well as the different early and late tender lettering and herald vs. flying Rio Grande logos seen on D&RGW locomotives. We have attempted to develop decal sheets that will allow the modeler to duplicate almost all engine markings. We recommend that the modeler refer to pictures that show the specific engine being modeled and the linked examples on this page before making their selection.

After sitting unused for a while it was re-lettered in 1951 for D&RGW road service using the same font used when it was lettered as the “Montezuma” for the fictional Cripple Creek & Tin Cup RR for the fair. Our decal set accurately recreates this lettering scheme and includes the black stripes as well as white numbers for the headlight.

D&RGW 6700 Series Idler Flat Car

The 6700 series idler flat cars were created to handle the heavy pipe traffic to the oil fields in the Farmingtion area. The pipe that was carried by the converted high-side gondolas was longer than the gondolas themselves. Therefore, idler cars were required between loaded pipe gons to allow for the overhang of the pipe loads. The 6700 series idler cars were converted from excess 30' stock cars and 30' box cars to meet this need, starting in 1955.

The following decal sets will letter one 6700 series idler flat as they were painted in service on the D&RGW:

D&RGRR 4000 Series 27' Box Car Decals

The D&RGRR 4000 series boxcars were originally built as class 5 boxcars between 1884 and 1895 for the D&RG and its subsequent variants due to the split from the Utah half of its original parent company. Many of these cars were rebuilt from the earlier 24’ boxcars as well. These boxcars continued in service through 1942 but the bulk of these cars were retired by 1926. The 27’ Box Cars went through several lettering schemes during their service on the D&RGRR. This lettering set represents what the cars looked like for the 1887 paint scheme, and will letter one car.

D&RGW 6000 Series 30' Flat Car Decals

One hundred 30' wooden flat cars were built built by the D&RG in the mid-1880s and were numbered from 6000 to 6099. However, the railroad soon required cars with greater capacity and these cars were replaced with heavier capacity cars as needed. Most of these cars were scrapped or sold, but a few were converted into Maintenance of Way service and survived to the end of service. None of these cars remained in revenue service by the end of World War II. This decal set covers the paint and lettering scheme for these cars from the time of the creation of the D&RGW, in 1921, until their end of revenue service, around 1944.

The following decal sets will letter one 6000 series 30' wooden flat car as they were painted in service on the D&RGW:

D&RGW 6200 Series 36' Flat Car Decals

The 6200 series flat cars of the D&RGW were original built as wood flat cars as the Class 20 (25 ton #6200 - 6209) and Class 21 (20 ton #6210 - 6219) series in 1918. These were both 34’ long. In 1937 these cars were rebuilt using cut down standard gauge bolsters and draft gear, as well as having the center and side sills reinforced with 6” x 8” steel angle stock. Their length was also increased to 36’ long. It appears that these cars received only one paint scheme during their service on the D&RGW narrow gauge. This set covers this lettering scheme and the minor lettering modifications they received.

D&RGW 6300 Series 40' Flat Car Decals

The 6300 series flat cars of the D&RGW were original built as wood flat cars as the Class 22 30 ton cars #6300-6314 in 1926. These were 40’ long. In 1934 (Not 1937 as indicated by Sloan.) these cars were re-enforced by adding rails to the underside of the side sills (Stan Schwedler indicates that #6313 had the rails added to the top-side of the car.) as well as adding 7-3/4" queen posts to replace the original 3" posts to add extra strength.

D&RGW MOW Cars #06051, 06084, & 06092 Decals

On3 MOW 06084 with SJD-354a decals. Kit by San Juan Car Company with extra details by Wiseman Model Services. Model and photograph by Dan Peterson.

This decal set is intended to cover D&RGW Maintenance of Way equipment for which model kits are readily available, but otherwise cannot be fitted into a general category of M.O.W. equipment; specifically, the ex-600 series flat cars that were converted to M.O.W. service, 06051, 06084, and 06092. While we normally design our decal sets to cover all the lettering schemes of a car over its' life on a railroad, with only one exception, we were unable to find any pictures of these cars in any paint scheme other than the post-1939, gray with black lettering/flying herald paint scheme. This set covers this last lettering scheme. Those interested in modeling these cars in the earlier paint scheme (red paint with white lettering) can use our 6000 series flat car decal set and make an educated guess as to the actual lettering used on the car.

The following decal sets will letter one of these cars in the flying herald paint scheme:

D&RGW 15mm MOW Box/Outfit Car Decals

This decal set is intended to cover D&RGW MOW Box/Outfit equipment. By 1926 many of the rebuilt 30’ 3000 series box cars were being used for non-revenue service. At that time there were still a few of the 4000 series box cars rebuilt for MOW service in use. (Commissary 04022 for example.) These were all painted red with white lettering with a very small number getting the Moffatt Herald as well. By the early 1940’s these cars were repainted in grey and given the Black “Flying Rio Grande” paint scheme. These cars slowly were scrapped as they wore out or were no longer needed until only a few were left when the D&RGW ceased operations in the late 1960’s. This set is for the post 1940’s grey and black scheme. The Commissary Car 04022 was probably never painted in this scheme but is included never the less.

D&RGW Flanger Decals

On3 Flanger OD using SJD-351c Decals. Kit by San Juan Car Company. Model and photograph by Dan Peterson.

This decal set was created for San Juan Car Company’s Flanger OD kit in On3. This set will letter Flanger OD, OE or OH in white lettering, or Flanger OD or OH in black lettering. The lettering on the Flangers saw the use of different stencils when they were repainted and we have included all of these differences in this set. Multiple choices of repack and reservoir dates are also included. These combinations of Flanger lettering options were chosen as the blades of these three Flangers were very similar. Flanger OE was almost identical in appearance to OD, and the other minor differences between these three flangers can easily be modeled using the SJCC kit.

On3 Pile Driver OB in 1956/71 lettering scheme with SJD-360 decals. Kit by San Juan Car Company. Model and photograph by Dan Peterson.

This decal set was created for the On3 San Juan Car Company Pile Driver OB kit. This set will letter this kit in either red with white lettering or MOW grey with black lettering. The red and white scheme is only known from two images but the grey and black scheme saw at least four schemes all of which are included in this set. This set was designed for the San Juan Car Company kit, however, it will also fit with the Durango Press kits but one will have to trim the large D&RGW OB lettering so that they will fit in the constraints of the winch car side sills.

Rotary OM was originally built in 1889. It was used all over the D&RG, and later the D&RGW but OM was later assigned to Chama, New Mexico, where it remains today after being purchased by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in 1970.

This decal set will letter Rotary OM as it appeared in the 1940’s and 1950’s in the MOW grey with black lettering scheme. White repack lettering is also provided.

D&RGW Passenger Cars Decals 1912 - 1951

This decal set is designed for the 1930-1951 time period, but can be used for most cars back to 1912 or earlier. The car names included are only for the cars existing in the 1930s, and the express markings are only for 1918 and later.

Lettering was always gold until the cars were painted yellow. At different times, Gold Leaf and Imitation Gold paint were used. The use of gold striping was discontinued in 1912. The actual lettering styles and layouts for the 1870 to 1912 period are hard to determine from photos because the photo emulsions in those days did not register the lettering on the red cars. One photo labeled as taken in 1886 does show "Denver & Rio Grande" on the letterboard in the same style as these decals.

The following decal sets will letter 4 to 7 passenger cars depending on the types of cars being lettered*. The Nn3 set will letter 5 to 8 passenger cars.** Please note: The Nn3 set will not have the car end lettering or the white reservoir test and repack dates found in the larger scale sets. The lettering is too small to print let alone see!
